Santa Cruz del Islote was uninhabited 150 years ago, but the island, which now has a population of over 1,200 people, has been considered home and proud for generations. Residents live close together and at four times the density of Manhattan because the entire island is the size of two soccer fields. Despite this, the community has made the most of its limited space by including a school, two stores, and a restaurant.
